Last week we had our first meeting with the Midwife. Having this appointment really helped to make it sink in. The Midwife was fantastic and didn''t seem to mind that Little man was running around investigating every thing in the room. The blue book is huge now, so not very good for sticking in your handbag. It was filled with so many questions and information but I was shocked that they no longer give out any information to help parents with any questions they may have as they go through their pregnancy.
A question the midwife did have for me was whether I was planning a home or hospital delivery. Now in any normal situation I would have said Hospital. The safety of having a large team and all the equipment to hand is something I find reassuring. Not to mention the rest as well as tea and toast on tap!
However when I went into labour with Little man nearly three years ago, it only lasted for 2 hours max and I'm concerned that this time round I may not make it there in time. I have an image in my head that I will be giving birth in the back of some mans taxi!! So may be home birth will be the way to go this time.
We have a long time yet to make a choice but I'd love to hear your experience of a short labour or home birth to help us decide what might be better.
I had a homebirth with my daughter, after a long induced labour at hospital with my son. The homebirth was AMAZING! I laboured *easily* from about 9pm - 11pm watching a film on my birthing ball, then from 11pm - 4am just dozed in bed through some contractions, which I honestly thought were not that bad. Then at 4:30am, went to the loo, and the contractions were coming thick and fast, but I managed to make a cup of tea, whilst my boyfriend attempted to fill the pool and called the midwife. I never made it into the pool, and I had Poppy on the sofa at 6am. Honestly, it was such a fantastic experience. Happy to chat more about it to you if you want any more info, etc. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. Its so lovely to hear about home births. I honestly do not know any one who has had one before and I even think its going to take so convincing my hubby to go with it.
ReplyDeleteWe have our midwife appointment today for our fourth baby. Our first baby was a typical hospital delivery. Our second was a midwife hospital delivery. Our third was a midwife home delivery. We will be having a midwife home delivery again. It's relaxed. You are in the comfort of your home. You will be happy with you decision. Problems can arise in both the hospital and at home, but statistically less interventions are made in home births. When problems do arise, midwives are prepared. I would do a home birth again...we are. -heather
ReplyDeleteMy second child came in 4 hours . I thought #3 would go even more quickly that we would follow the pattern. Instead my water broke at 34 wks and it took him 32 hours to actually arrive from quite a complicated labor / delivery .( They were all 3 hospital births though) I am sure whatever decision you make though will be the best one for yourself and your family.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations by the way. Such an exciting time for you.
ReplyDeleteI had a lovely home birth with my third, and would recommend it if you had a straightforward delivery last time.
ReplyDeleteYou have to be 100% sure it is right for you though. ITs not for everyone. xx
