Revisting Tuff Spot Play: Mash Potato

Tuff spots are a great way to introduce children to a wide range of materials to help children explore their senses and imagination. Tuff spots can be any thing which is flat and has a low rim to allow children to reach in the tray with ease and explore its contents. In this example we are using a cat litter tray, perfect if you don't have a garden.

This is an idea we thought of a few years back and blogged abut but this has become such an unusual favourite of ours I thought it would be nice to revisit this post. To save on a few pennies we used powder/dried mash potato. We followed to instructions on the back to make the 'Smash' up but you could alternative use fresh potatoes if you do not like the smell.
.

We raided our crafts cupboard and the children picked out a few things to add to the potato. Each time can be a new experience with mash potato. In this example I have added feathers and glitter but mash could also work great for snow during winter play.

Children love to explore the texture and feel it moving in between their fingers. Smash is a good material because it can be manipulated into different shapes like play dough. P used the mash potato to build it up and make it into a volcano. The feathers were the lava bursting out of the top. Little man on the other hand enjoys making marks out of the mash, he used the end of the feathers to draw a pattern.
