How to make a Saint George's Day Shield

Help your children to make their own Knights shield using simple things from your craft box.

Little man has developed an interest in knights since being brought a castle last Christmas. Every so often he would get the castle out of the box and daddy would make it up for him. Now that he is into solders and super hero, the castle has been out a lot more and has it's own little space in the living room. This play I will admit has become a little violent and some to always involve killing some one. The idea behind this play was to encourage Little Man to play 'nicely' in these roles, such as saving a princess, slaying a dragon and riding around on his hobby horse.

Resources:
Paint,
Card,
Scissors,
Masking tape,
Paint Brushes

We started off by looking at pictures of Shields on Google and decided to make one's with the St George's shield as it is coming up to St George's day. They both choose to do the top's differently and helped to cut out the card using safety scissors.

We then used a picture of the shield as an example of how to paint it but your children could make up their own too.

With little man we spoke about the colour's we were using and the painting also helped to develop his grip. P and I had a discussion about how some Knights would have a family Crest on their Shields and she described what our family shield would look like, so that may be another post to come soon.

Once the paint had dried out we turned the shield over and added straps for their arm to go through. The straps were cut out of another piece of card and then fixed to the shield using masking tape.
