10 Play Ideas For a Rainy Day

Yes I know it's the middle of the summer here in the UK but you can never predict what our weather will do and even in the summer we experience weeks of rain. Sitting there today with the children while it was pouring it down outside I thought I could do with a list of idea's for what to do when we are stuck in doors. Looking through the ideas already on Playful Learners I thought it would make a nice post to share with you all.

Having a few resources ready for when the children are stuck in doors or for when you need a quiet activity for the children to do are always handy. Play dough mats are a great resource for these occasions. You can build up a supply of these and use different mat's each time, you could even let the kiddies pick.

Printing with fruit and vegetables is a firm favourite in our house and with all the crab apples falling from the trees at the moment why not keep a couple for painting and printing.

If you don't have any fruit or vegetables going spare you could try using material from around the home such as string or ribbon. We loved the symmetrical affect left after some string painting.

Save up some recycling materials and store them ready for a rainy day. Then let the children's imagination go wild with some junk modelling

Make your own DIY rainbow crayons

Try out a science experiment such as looking at whether objects sink or float

Read some of your favourite books and turn them into a craft. My eldest two used to love rainbow fish and it made a beautiful art project.

Animal masks make a great craft which can be used afterwards in play. You could even turn your whole living room into a jungle.

Sensory play activities can be a lovely change to routine and keeps the children busy for a long long time. Mash Potato play is one we do not try often but it's great fun even in doors!

I plan on retrying this craft in a few days time as I have a new idea for dyeing the pasta like we do the rice we play with. Pasta necklaces will never grow old and make such lovely presents.

I hope you enjoy these crafts and activities.
