If you like food, a visit to Edinburgh should be
at the top of your list in terms of foodie destinations. With exquisite
culinary delights making the menu at restaurants throughout the city, and
dining rooms that take your breath away, you needn't venture far from your Travelodge hotel in Edinburgh to find an
amazing dining experience. There are, of course, plenty of opportunities to
dine in Edinburgh, but for something truly special, why not try a few of the
suggestions below:
The Witchery by the Castle
Widely known as the best restaurant in the city
and one that has been enjoyed by locals, visitors to the city and A Listers
alike, The
Witchery is the ultimate in Edinburgh dining. Situated
just as stone’s throw away from Edinburgh castle, this stunning restaurant is
located at Boswell's Court, a historic merchant's house dating back to 1595 and
named after James Boswell who lived here in the 18th Century.
Originally the owner of The Witchery just bought the basement area of the then
almost derelict building, but has since acquired more of the building and an
adjacent one, allowing for several private dining options and a number of
suites to be located here. With numerous historic pieces still intact,
including the winding turret staircase and the Secret Garden, where private
dining is offered, it's a wonderfully atmospheric place to visit and utterly
stunning. No wonder Andrew Lloyd Webber once said, 'Is this the prettiest
restaurant ever? I think so.'
Food wise, you won't be disappointed. Along with
offering a stunning setting, the food here is legendary, but despite the
amazing food and excellent reputation, the price tag can only be described as
very reasonable. Choose from starters of haggis, neaps and tatties or wild
borders pigeon, grilled potato terrine, gem lettuce and burnt onion mayonnaise.
Sample the amazing oysters, choose from native Lindisfarne oysters grown on the
shores of the Lindisfarne nature reserve or Oban oysters, grown in the waters
of Argyllshire. Enjoy a delicious main of Lamb Wellington and finish with a
delicious Witchery pudding selection, just perfect for sharing. You simply
can't miss a visit to this amazing place on your visit to Edinburgh.
Dine at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo
Take a once in a lifetime chance to dine in
Edinburgh Castle itself. Enjoy a champagne and canapés reception in the
courtyard of the beautiful Queen Anne Room, before moving inside to enjoy a
delicious three course meal with wine, followed by coffee and traditional
Scottish tablet. You'll watch a special performance by the Tattoo cast members
and listen to an introduction to the Tattoo by the Producer, before being
escorted over the drawbridge to your premier seating in the outdoor arena,
offering the very best seats in the house. The Edinburgh Tattoo takes place in summer every year and is one of Scotland's best loved
festivals. Taking your place in the VIP section and enjoying an exquisite
dinner in none other than the castle itself, simply cannot be missed.
Clearly, Edinburgh can hold its own in the
gastronomic world. So when are you coming to try the taste bud tantalising
dishes on offer?
