Over
the last 15 years The Scottish Friendly have been supporting and
encouraging a love for literacy by sponsoring the ScottishFriendly Children’s Book Tour and
in association with the Scottish BookTrust have brought leading UK
and international children’s authors to children in schools and libraries
across the country. Coming from a family of poets Literacy is very
important to me and I encouraged a love of literacy onto my children.
This
year the Scottish friendly came up with a competition called the Scottish Friendly Letterfall. A
competition designed for linguistic gymlastics to compete against one another
to come up with as many words as they possibly can.
All you need to do is make as many words as
you can. Once you make a word the tiles used will disappear and you can
continue to think of more but be quick you only have until the tile explode to
get as many as you can.
The competition starts on the 22nd September and the
top player from each country at noon on 3rd November 2014 will win £100 each! They
will then be able to go forward to the grand final on the 28th November 2014 to
compete in a play off to win £500.
I found the game to be a little like Tetris, very addictive!!
My nine year old has had a great fun coming up with words and after some
practice she's getting really good at it and it a great way for her to practice
her spellings.
Winner announcement!!
Nichola Leaver, age 20, has been named the country’s leading
wordsmith after winning a national online word competition.
Ms Leaver competed in the ‘Letterfall Championship 2014’, run
by ISA provider Scottish Friendly. The competition saw hundreds of people from
all over the country compete at playing the popular online, Scrabble®-inspired word
game, Letterfall.
Some of the interesting words found were: bramblings, hogshead, exculpate, sawhorses, airpower and jimmied.
